The biggest change to Internet domains names in 26 years is almost here and with it comes challenges for trademark owners.
By the end of June, ICANN will publish the list of all the new domains applied for as part of its new Top Level Domain (TLD) program – which has been described as innovative and problematic in equal measure. Despite the controversy, more than 1,500 new TLD applications are expected to be announced.
The scale of this change in the Internet naming system means all trademark owners – whether they have applied for a new gTLD or not – need to be aware if an application infringes their legal rights or dilutes their business interests. But with a limited window to comment or object to an application, trademark owners will need to move quickly.
